Cannabis should be enjoyed thoughtfully and responsibly. This page is here to share general information about safer use, Ontario rules, and how to help protect yourself and others.

Legal age and Ontario rules
In Ontario, you must be 19 years of age or older to buy, use, possess, or grow recreational cannabis.

Where you can buy:

The Ontario Cannabis Store (OCS) online, or

Licensed private retailers authorized by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO).

Possession limits:

Up to 30 grams of dried cannabis (or equivalent) in public.

Where you can use:

Generally where tobacco smoking and vaping are allowed, with some exceptions and local bylaws.

Using cannabis responsibly
Everyone’s relationship with cannabis is different. If you choose to use:

Start low and go slow

Especially if you’re new or trying a new product or method.

Edibles can take up to 2 hours (or more) to fully kick in, avoid taking more while you’re still waiting to feel the effects.

Know the product

Check THC and CBD levels.

High-THC products or concentrates can increase the risk of unpleasant or harmful effects.

Avoid mixing with alcohol or other substances

Combining cannabis with alcohol or other drugs can increase impairment and risks.

Use in a safe environment

Choose a comfortable place and avoid situations where you need to drive, operate machinery, or make big decisions.

Don’t drive high
Driving while impaired by cannabis is dangerous and illegal.

Cannabis can affect reaction time, coordination, attention, and decision-making.
​

There are strict penalties for drug-impaired driving.

Plan ahead:

Use a designated driver, taxi, rideshare, or public transit.

Stay where you are until you are no longer impaired.
